Overview
Stone shower and bathroom walls range from natural stone tile and slabs (marble, granite, travertine) to engineered stone and stone-look panels. They are hard, often brittle, and sometimes porous. As with tile, the visible stone is a finish — a load-bearing grab bar still depends on studs or blocking behind it. The stone just adds a demanding surface to get through cleanly.
Stone is demanding to drill: it can overheat, chip at the surface, or crack outright if the entry is not carefully controlled. This is slow, deliberate work where mistakes are hard to hide and an expensive slab is on the line, so it is best left to a professional with the right tooling and experience rather than attempted as a DIY project. Technique matters more here than on almost any other surface.
Behind stone there is typically backer board and framing. An installer locates studs or adds blocking so the bar's fastenings reach solid material, the same principle as any wall. The hard surface does not change the need for a structural anchor point.
Many natural stones are porous and sealed at the surface. Penetrations should be sealed so water does not enter the stone or reach the wall behind it, and the sealing method should suit the specific stone. In wet areas this protects both the wall and the appearance of the stone.
Stone combines expense, brittleness, and hidden structure. A cracked slab is costly to replace, and the fastening still has to be genuinely secure. Confirming backing and drilling correctly are well worth careful, experienced hands.
